Simple Ways To De-Stress

feet_walking-220x165There is no getting away from it – life today is CRAZY! In the course of just one day, we are subject to an insane amount of stimulation – so much so, that it’s no wonder that many of us feel wound up as tightly as a drum. There’s never been a more important time to find time in your busy day to de-stress. Given that stress could be a major contributor to almost every disease, and speeds up the aging process, it’s vital that we discover a way to find a daily inner peace. These are 3 ways that work for me:

1. Audio Books: If my mind is racing a mile-a-minute, I sometimes just can’t even think of mediating, so, I  download a really good Spiritual audio book (my recent favorite is: Eckhart Tolle’s Stillness Speaks.) lie down on my bed or a yoga mat, and switch on to switch off!. It’s important to make sure you are really comfy: Place a pillow under your knees and a perhaps use a neck pillow. The icing on the cake could even be a lavender-filled eye-bag.

2. Meditation: Yes – “If only it were that easy!” I know, mediation is not for the monkey mind, however, a small start is all that’s needed. If you are new to meditation, don’t think you have to force yourself to sit down for a 20 minute session. You really don’t. Sometimes just sitting still and employing a simple deep-breathing mediation technique will help you to slow down your thoughts enough to find a moment of peace and stillness.

3. Walk! Going for a walk is about the most underrated way of de-stressing. I go for regular 15-minute walks throughout my day. Sitting glued to a computer screen, shoulders all hunched up, is a sure way to fire those stress chemicals through my body on an hourly basis! I just put my computer to sleep, slip on some running shoes or comfy Birkenstocks, and take off somewhere. The key is to pay attention to to my walk, or to walk “mindfully,” which means that I pay attention to how my feet hit the sidewalk, how my body feels, how I am breathing, the sounds/colors/smells around me. Just by getting lost in my senses, I come back refreshed and ready to go.
