Easier Softer Resolutions

Easier Softer Resolutions

Many people make resolutions at this time of year, and according to researchers, most people break them fairly soon.

Here’s another approach. I call it “moving in the direction of” and it is a way of feeling compassion for yourself which actually
can help you make the changes you would like to in your life.

Try this. Think of something you would like to do, like practice yoga every day, or meditate every morning or eat less sweets.
Instead of making this an iron-clad “have to”, choose as an example to move in the direction of eating less sweets. Then when you would usually have dessert when you eat out, have it, but only eat three bites. That is “moving in the direction of” eating less sweets.

Instead of falling into the mental trap of saying “it’s not worth it unless I can practice yoga for an hour, or for thirty minutes”,
try to practice for 15 to even 10. Or try to practice for thirty minutes three times a week.

Just consistently and lovingly “move in the direction of” your commitments, your health, your well-being.

Softer steps toward your goal incite less resistance and allow for change.

May we live like the lotus, at home in the muddy water.
