I was recently sent a review copy of Sustainable Wellness by Matt Mumber, MD and Heather Reed. Matt Mumber is a board-certified radiation oncologist and codirector of the MD Ambassador Program and Integrative Oncology Program and Harbin Clinic in GA. Heather Reed is a yoga teacher, who specialized in teaching meditation techniques for people living with cancer and other chronic illnesses.

The title of the book attracted me and as soon as I read the foreword by Dr. Andrew Weil, I knew I was in good hands. This is as much a book for preventing illness, as its one for those who are currently suffering. Dr. Mumber has a huge and very open mind, which is seriously refreshing, given his medical background. He takes an entirely holistic approach to illness and wellness, and challenges many conventionally held beliefs while not being in the least bit new-agey.

It a really easy-to-follow, and what I call, a “functional” book. It’s one that you’ll want to keep on your nightstand so that you can not only get to grips with what he’s teaching, but also so that you can go through the exercises sequentially. Actually, you’ll want to have a pad and pencil to hand too, because Dr. Mumber invites you to deeply explore yourself by way of some fascinating exercises.

Every chapter includes: Questions To Ponder, A Review, and “Yoga Bits”, which are little daily tips to help you stay connected. The book also includes savvy nutritional, physical and spiritual advice – all of which is both practical and very easy to understand. I especially love Dr. Mumbers personal stories that are peppered throughout.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, and if you know anyone who is struggling with illness, it’s a must-read.
