lettuceBeing a green girl involves taking a few actions that require a tiny bit more effort, but which pay huge dividends in terms of  a healthy you and a healthy planet. I eat some kind of salad leaf almost everyday, so the buying and storing of lettuce has been a journey of discovery. I try to avoid bagged lettuce whenever possible. It’s less nutritious and delicious than a head of organically grown lettuce and  you  also have contend with the fact that the plastic bag is not of a reusable nature! My best and cheapest lettuce finds are always at a farmer’s market, so I buy two or three heads for the week and as soon as I get home, wash them, cut them up and store them in a bag, which until recently was a sealable plastic bag. Although I reused the bag a gazillion times, I just wanted rid of all that plastic in my crisper drawer. So I was delighted to find the Bamboo-Bag bamboo-bag. bamboobag

Bamboo produces an anti-fungal protein, which binds to the fabric filaments during processing. The special retting process of the bamboo-bag, doesn’t involve the harmful chemical processing that is common in bamboo manufacturing. This special bamboo feels like linen and allows your produce to breathe at at the same time, retains a little moisture in the bag. How perfect for lettuce! So I got my “Lettuce Pouch” and now I don’t even need my salad spinner – I simply wash the lettuce, put it straight in the bag, whirl it around about 10 times outside (or out the window), which is great for your biceps by the way, and that’s it – into the crisper drawer it goes. This great little company carries bags of all different sizes, even one for a baguette. Don’t forget to take some reusable produce bags to the store or market too – Delight and Eco Bags carry a great selection.
