BURNING BRIGHT

I love candles any time of year, but during the Holidays, they are a must-have. It’s vital to realize, however, that some candles burn “dirty”. You probably know by now to avoid paraffin wax, and there are some great alternatives. My favorite candle waxes are coconut and beeswax. Beeswax is great for allergy-sufferers because it actually improves your indoor air quality. I love to make my own beeswax candles. However, if I’m buying a beautiful candle, I always look for coconut oil wax because it burns so clean (90% cleaner than a soy wax candle.)

The other thing to consider when buying a candle, is how it is scented. If it is scented (and many are,) with synthetic fragrance, then it likely contains a class of chemicals called phthalates, which are contain neurotoxins and hormone-disrupting agents.

I was thrilled to find out that the beautiful Voluspa candles that you may have seen in boutiques and fancy beauty stores (gorgeous packaging,) use a special coconut wax blend, and they are phthalate-free. Their new Japonica collection is out-of-this-world, and perfect for creating a warm, sensuous environment.

Pure Light candles are another great option. They, too, are made from beautiful, clean coconut wax, and they are naturally scented with beautiful pure essential oil blends. I’m obsessed with their “Celebrate” candle for the Holidays – it gives of a cinnamony/clove and spicy scent without the sickly sweetness that you find at this time of year in stores like Bed Bath & Beyond (not that I don’t love B, B, and B.)

Either way, when you are out and about shopping for Holiday goodies, be very mindful about your candles. Remember that indoor air quality is typically 7-10 times worse than outdoor air quality. When you are all hunkered down inside with less ventilation than in the summer, you need to minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals.
