Laundry Sweeteners: How to naturally scent your laundry

I am obsessed with sweet smells, which is why I chose to study aromatherapy. Since becoming a Gorgeously Green girl, I cannot abide any synthetic scents because I know how toxic they are, yet I wanted to figure out a way to make my laundry smell sweet, without having to buy expensive eco-laundry products. Here’s how to integrate my favorite Laundry Sweeteners into your laundry routine.

First you need to decide what kind of fragrance you love. If you want a fresh/clean scent, I suggest going with one of the following: Lavender, rosemary, lemongrass or bergamot. If you want a floral scent, go with either: geranium or neroli. You can definitely blend your oils together for a unique scent that’s all your own, or even integrate different scent profiles – I love a citrus scent in the summer time.

Here’s how to integrate laundry sweeteners into your routine:

Find a laundry detergent that is dye & perfume free (there are lots of recommendations on this site). Be sure to check all of your laundry products – from detergent to softeners to dryer sheets (there are so many wonderful alternatives in the green space. Click here to read some of my favorites.)

Add 10 drops of your chosen oil to the water softener compartment of your washer. Then cut out a 6×6″ square of cotton fabric (an old sheet or napkin will do,) and add 10 drops of the same essential oil that you used in the wash, on to it. Pop this square of fabric into the tumble dryer with your clothes while drying.

The kicker is that these pure, and natural essential oils, are also therapeutic, so laying your head on your geranium “scented” pillowcase, will put you in a very good mood!

  1. I finally have an outside line after drying clothes on racks inside for the last 3 years. And today I found some bamboo clothes pins/pegs. I probably look pretty stupid burying my face in the laundry as I pull it off the line – but I love, love, love the smell of laundry dried outside.
