BPAs- Brain Toxins For Lunch?

I was in the grocery store yesterday and overheard two moms commenting on which apples they liked best – one was definitely a Granny Smith girl, and the other (piling them up in her basket,) was more into Golden Delicious. The apples looked good, however, this particular grocery store doesn’t carry organic apples and so I wasn’t buying any. You may think that the odd apple surely won’t cause too much harm, and one can’t overlook the fact that organic apples are almost twice the price, but if you buying apples for your kids – beware!

One of the pesticides used in and on apples in called Chlorpyrifos, which is a neurotoxin, meaning that it affects the brain and nervous system. Children are way more susceptible to the adverse effects because they metabolize pesticides differently to adults, and because their bodies are obviously smaller. Testing done of a group of kids found that those with this pesticide in their blood were more likely to have ADHD and lower IQ’s.

That’s not the only pesticide that’s in an apple either. There are also 17 Honeybee Toxins, 7 Known/Probable Carcinogens, 19 Suspected Hormone Disruptors, 6 Developmental/Reproductive Toxins. So an organic apple might seem like a luxury that only few can afford, but non-organic apples come with a very heavy price-tag – not just to the environment, but to the health of your kids.

It’s also really important that you buy organic apple juice and applesauce – because they are the more concentrated versions of the fruit. 1. Why doesn’t the government notify us of the dangers of the food they are selling?!

Thank you so much for the warning, Sophie!

  2. I am so excited that apple season is here, but I’m committing to buying only organic apples this year. I can’t do organic on all my groceries, but with those “dirty dozen” it’s worth it.

  3. Hi Sophie,

I was wondering if you could share with me where you get your information from – regarding the list of pesticides in an un-organic apple. Not that I am disputing the information at all (I also only buy organic apples!), I am just thinking that I would like to read further from your source(s).
    Thanks!
    PS Love what you do!
