You Owe It To Yourself

How on Earth do we find the time to workout? It’s admittedly very hard to carve out the time everyday to work out but I absolutely know that I owe it to myself. I also know that I deserve to feel strong, healthy and beautiful, no matter my age, weight, or circumstances. And so do you!

However, in order for me to carve out this vital workout time, I have to make it a priority. Yes – I have a kid to get out the door, blogs & books to write, segments to shoot, and that’s not even factoring in the planning, shopping and cooking for my family –  and I know that I’m not alone. Virtually every woman I know has a pretty full plate, which is fantastic, however, in order to be able to keep functioning at such a high level, and to be able to keep on doing it for years, we need to be physically strong and healthy. So, working out needs to be right up there near the very top of our priority lists.

The beauty of working out is that it NEVER FAILS to make me feel better. Even on a day when I’ve been crippled by fear or depression, if I can manage to pull on a pair of running shoes and take the first step outside, I’m on my way feeling immeasurably better. It’s the always the first step that counts, because once I’m on the road, the treadmill or the yoga mat, I’m on my way – the next step, posture or exercise naturally follows, and before I know it I’ve done my workout.

Our lifestyles are 100% more sedentary than they were at any time in history. The fact that we sit bent over a computer, or stuffed behind a steering wheel for many hours a day, means that we need to be ever more vigilant about our health.

I try to be mindful as I go through each day by inquiring to myself how many hours I’ve been sitting. For example, today I sat behind the wheel of a car for 30 minutes, sat in the Blow Dry salon for 40 minutes, sat in the car for another 40 minutes, sat in a meeting for 60 minutes, sat in the car for another 40 minutes, and then came home and sat at my computer for another 60 minutes. All this sitting made up half my day, and unless I’d really thought about it, I could have easily gotten in another 3-4 hours of sitting before hitting the couch tonight. BUT, I kind of knew my body needed to move and since I had no workout class scheduled, I whipped out my kettle bell weights and did a 15 minute workout, some yoga stretches, and took my dog for a 30 minute walk. I also know that I’ll be hitting a hard core class tomorrow to take care of keeping my muscles and bones strong. Will I feel like doing it? HECK NO!!!!!!!!  But will I just ignore my resistance and do it? YES – because I love feeling strong, healthy and good about myself.
