I have been suffering from gum disease on-and-off for the last 10 years, and I cannot seems to find a toothpaste that helps this issue. I hate the way my gums look (inflamed), so it’s a both a health and beauty concern. Do you have any advice, Sophie?
I pick out one health/beauty question a week to answer, and this on from Amy in Marina Del Rey, CA, popped out because I was sent a toothpaste to try a few weeks ago, and I think I love it. It’s called Livionex, and it’s actually a gel, which was created and researched by a team at the University of Texas. Here’s the scoop: Apparently plaque is like a film (think plastic wrap infused with bacteria). And this biofilm is hard to remove. Livionex used activated adathamil to break up the film, which apparently makes it way more effective than most leading brands of anit-plaque/anti-gingivitis toothpastes.
So what does it feel like? It’s quite different from your regular paste. Due to the fact that it doesn’t contain foaming agents such as the nasty SLS, it doesn’t foam up at all. It also doesn’t contain flavor, so you don’t get that kick of peppermint or whatever flavor makes your mouth feel clean. However, it leaves my teeth feeling shinier, and way cleaning than a regular toothpaste, which must have to do with this bacterial film being removed pronto!
Also since it’s water-soluble, you spread it evenly over your teeth (without adding water to it), brush and then rinse out as usual. They say that you could use a mouthwash if you want the zing feel and taste, but I say to beware of all the brands that are filled with alcohol and synthetic junk. Easy to make your own – have a go at my recipe.
