The Gorgeously Green Diet Book winners are Lourdes and Ashley C – Congratulations.
The worst that I probably have is vasoline. I’ve read about how gross it is, but when the winter weather hits, it is so hard not to use on dry lips. I’m always trying to find a better alternative.
Luckily I have done a really good job of getting rid of the bad products I had–however I have a roommate with plenty of bad products and I need to find a way to gently educate her…
pretty please!
I’ve been trying to “green” my bathroom, but it is a process. My toilet bowl cleaner is atrocious, containing Hydrochloric acid. Ahhh.. can burn the skin and cause blindness! Peace out old toilet bowl cleaner 🙂
Most toxic product:cyclopentasiloxane. Mary Kay medium coverage foundation..
The most toxic product: Dow toliet bowl gel.
Yea I wanna win!!
Most toxic? I’m ashamed to say it has to be Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover. I know it’s bad, but it really works! (Not buying it again, I promise!)
Smells great, but it’s a product from Germany and it’s pretty toxic.
Reviva Labs Skin Energizing Gel – (contains Phenoxyenthanol)
I LOVE natural skin care products, and I’ve never tried this brand before! I really hope I win!
I have a facial cleanser that has toxic ingredents. I didn’t want to waste so but I am definitely looking for another one soon!:)
perfume. i’ve changed most of my beauty products, but i still have perfume, and have no idea what ingredients it contains.
I am happy to say I have switched over to organic as much as possible. My one big toxic problem is acne cream. I have over thirty acne and don’t know how to get it under control without the heavy artillery. What’s a GG girl to do?
I am always exploring natural skin options…haven’t tried this one…would love too!
I thought I tossed out all my bad stuff, but I just found Goldwell Nice Balance Milk with sodium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate, PVP, hydrogenated polydecene, methylparaben, trideceth-10, PEG-45M, polysilicone-9, fragrance and the toxic list goes on and on.
This yucky stuff is going away today!
oops…forgot this the first time..most toxic ingredients in some shampoo/soft soap that we have “left” in our home is S.L.S. – Sodium Laureth Sulfate…I believe it makes the soap “foamy”…not good for our body though…
Shampoo has S.L.S. LOVE your books!
Lidocaine in my aloe vera gel…
I am nominating my wife & myself. We were some of Kristie’s first “Guinea pigs” for trying out her products. She grew her organic herbs in our back yard and mixed them up in our basement. We helped and watched her struggle for many years to get to where she is at. Her products are a result of years of study, experimentation (on us! :-)) true caring and effort, and are simply the finest in the world.
Propylene Glycol in my hand sanitizer!!! I had no idea until I just checked. Propylene Glycol is a petroleum derivatives that acts as a solvent, surfactant, and wetting agent. It can easily penetrate the skin, and can weaken protein and cellular structure. In fact, PG penetrates the skin so quickly that the EPA warns factory workers to avoid skin contact, to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. I will not be using this anymore. Looks like I go back to using pure alcohol!
My shampoo is the winner of “the worst product” in my bathroom. I am changing out products as fast as I can. I would love to try this line of skin care. Thanks
I have some bar soap from Bath & Body Works that I suspect isn’t entirely natural.
My son’s Paul Mitchell FirmStyle Hair Glue has so many chemicals that it would take me forever to list them! Yuck!!!
I recently began an online study of natural health and wellness. Basically, if you can not eat what you put on your skin it is no good, so I am proud to say that I have nothing in my bathroom that is toxic. Well, still working on the water part!
OMG- I really thought I had thrown out my old dandruff shampoo that contains Coal Tar- Thank you for making me look! I just tossed the stuff. A year or so ago when I found out it was bad for me, I went and seached for a healthier alternative, I found and now am in LOVE with Aubrey’s Organic Calaguala Fern Shampoo, this stuff actually works better than any dandruff shampoo I have ever had!!
The most toxic is definitely everything in my makeup bag. Although, I don’t wear makeup much to avoid the chemicals and because I can’t afford the good, green stuff. 🙁
I have some left over tinted moisturizer with parabens that I am trying to use up before buying new organic products. I have replaced everything else with organic or natural products (no parabens, no fragrance, no SLS), but I hate just throwing things away–that doesn’t seem green either.
my husband still has his head and shoulders shampoo, all kinds of toxic ingredients in it,he won;t toss it, even though i have all natural products in there now for me and and the kids.
It’s probably my MAC make-up, which I’m trying to finish up.
I’m incredibly new to all of this. So, other than a couple of product gifts from a good friend of mine, you could pick up just about anything in my bathroom and find all sorts of suspect ingredients. Thanks!
After reading Gorgeously Green I have tossed most of my toxic products, but did keep “The Healing Garden Organics Wild Honey Body Lotion”.(even though I use organic coconut oil as my moisturizer now) I found your book to be such an eye opener as even this product that claims to be 85% organic is loaded with toxins. It is a great case and point when talking to friends and family that labels must be read and that just because a product is labelled organic does not mean it is a safer alternative. This product contains 1 thing form your “red alert” list, Fragrance. It also contains items from your “orange alert” like:
Triethanolamine
Methylparaben
Butylparaben
Ethylparaben
Isobutylparaben
Propylparaben
Carbomer
It would be great to have an alternative like the pomegranate body lotion.
One would probably be an “Herbal” Essence shampoo.
I’m currently trying to go natural and organic after reading your book. So far I’m doing OK as far as hair products go, but when it comes to skin I get a little wary. I’m just not sure what will be best for my skin. Therefore I’d love to win some free samples and give a few products a try. My current skin routine products, including make-up, contain long lists of ingredients I can’t even pronounce. Maybe that’t why my face never stops breaking out…
Hopefully, going green will be the only option in the near future.
I just went in the bathroom and grabbed my son’s baby wash.. well, that has EVERYTHING (PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, SLS, Polysorbate 20, etc). Not so happy to rub on my baby’s belly. I know the stuff in my bathroom is probably 20 times worse. AGH!
I love natural skincare!!!
The worst products I own are ancient (probably 10+ years) lotions and make-up that I have just stuck in a drawer! I have yet to find a natural product I truly love — it gets costly trying them out and I hate wasting $$$. I hope to win to try these goodies out! Thanks!
Currently, the most toxic product in my bathroom is my hairspray. I’ve able to convert most of my other things over, but haven’t been able to ditch the spray just yet!
I tossed all of my toxic stuff 🙂
I decieded to go through and “green clean” my makeup, cleansers and accesories which included Nair – to remove hair from legs. And it included bhuatane!! Can you believe it- no more of that EVER.
I would really like to try the Tilvee products as I have been able to green almost everything, but a good cleanser & moisturizer product. I have been having trouble finding something that works well for me after having my second child. I currently use dove soap ( I know it’s probably not the best) and a moisturizer that I put olive oil into once in a while. Living in Colorado my face can get a little dry in the winter. Please consider me for a chance to try your products!
The most disturbing product I found is my young daughter’s hair conditioner- they claim it’s gentle, it’s tear free but it has multiple parabens, esters, and dyes. As of last night I have decided to “go green” with our personal care products and I will start with getting rid of this one!! I am so horrified at the “stuff” my family and I have been using on and in our bodies!!!
Bathroom cleaners aside–we all know how horribly toxice they are, I was shocked to see that my conditioner for blond color treated hair was such a cross and bones cocktail of chemicals! Ugh! Throwing in trash straight away!
aerosol deodorant
Ew! That has to be some leftover Avon eye cream that I used once as a former rep!
Wouldn’t dare put that on my face again! Yuck 😛
Phthalates, toluene, and formaldehyde in Nail Polish is linked to causing cancer. I’m trying to replace all of this with Butter Nail Polish that is free of all these chemicals and doesn’t stink up the room.
CLAIROL NICE ‘N EASY
What they claim: Natural-looking colour with complete grey coverage.
“All hair dye sold in the EU containing phenylenediamines, resorcinol and/or 1-naphthol must carry a warning: “Can cause an allergic reaction. Do not use to colour eyelashes or eyebrows.” Other hair dye ingredients – including coal tar dyes, 4-chloro-m-phenylenediamine, 2,4-toluenediamine, 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine and 4-amino-2-nitrophenol – have proven carcinogenic in at least one animal species. In humans, intensive longer-term use of permanent hair dye is associated with breast, ovarian and bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple meyeloma and rheumatoid arthritis.”
wow, after doing my research, I found out that I can’t even pronounce those chemicals!Do I really want that junk seeping into my body?? organic substitute? yes please!!!!
The worst product I own right now is Neutrogena face wash. I haven’t thrown it away yet, because I absolutely hate throwing stuff away & wasting. So it sits in my cupboard until it needs to be used… because I have better face wash now until I run out one day with no back up ;/
The most toxic thing in my bathroom…probably the air after my husband has been in there for a while. 😉 Seriously, my exfoliating foot creme. Full of names I can’t pronouce, numbers that mean who knows what and several different parabens. What am I doing? Reading the label makes me what want to toss it now!
It’s a toss up between shampoo and Comet…
What a wonderful giveaway! I’m in need a new body creme, Illinois winters are rough on your skin.
I’m ALL about the natural products-I really can’t do anything else because I’m so sensitive!!
Thank you all for this chance 🙂
Good luck everyone!
I switched to greener body products a couple of years ago.and am tryin got convert my husband…..I would love a chance to try a new brand:)
The worst product I have in my bathroom is probably prescription nasal spray that I used months ago for severe allergies. All cleaning supplies are Method brand, which I think is pretty good.
Bubble Bath. They all contain SLS. I guess because it is the ingredient that produces bubbles. UGH!
Hmmm, toss up between the two Oil of Olay face moisterizers (that I have found a replacement for but have yet to dispose of them) and my Victoria’s Secret Pink Body Lotion (couple of parabens, some other nasties). Smells so good, but oh so bad with the chemicals.
Probably the Eucerin. The dermatologist insists on this because I have “the driest skin I’ve ever seen”. It’s been that way since I was 15 for goodness’ sake. But I would love to try something new and good for me.
This is awful to admit but I must confess: we have hard water and sometimes have to use LIME AWAY! (But I do open the windows and use vinegar when possible):(
I scowered my bathroom to see the most toxic thing that I use. With the flu and cold season, I am a Lysol Disinfectant Spray fanatic and sometimes I use the Lysol disinfectant wipes for the counter tops, light switch, toilet, etc. I truly feel badly for using these products. I wish that there was a natural product that I could use to disinfect the bathroom and leave it smelling clean. I have been searching the shelves of many local health food stores and I haven’t found anything comparable. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. I have replaced many of my other cleaners with products made by Seventh Generation and Ecover and have been happy with the results.
The worst is our kids avon bath and body paint which they just received as a gift from a well meaning aunt. We are trying to use it up asap as the kids were given it before I could hide it! It scores a 7 on the skin deep database with tons of nasty stuff.Ingredients from packaging: WATER; SD ALCOHOL 40-B; POLYSORBATE 20; SODIUM LAUROYL SARCOSINATE; TEA-LAURYL SULFATE; BENZOIC ACID; FRAGRANCE; XANTHAN GUM; CITRIC ACID; TETRASODIUM EDTA; MAY CONTAIN :; D&C RED NO.33; FD&C RED NO.4; FD&C YELLOW NO.5; FD&C BLUE NO.1
Needless to say I’m letting them use tons of it to get rid of it, using some up when they are not looking and giving them a very good rinse after. Not looking forward to the “character” bubble bath kits they get from grandma every xmas!
My older sister used to have this infatuation with perfectly shiny skin and once she graduated from high school, we cleaned out her bathroom cabinet and found about 7 or 8 bottles of mineral oil! We threw it all out and I am glad after reading Gorgeously Green that we did!
I’m slowly replenishing bad products with only organic products for me and my family….it is fun to look forward to trying new eco-friendly products!
My shampoo, and draino. My bathroom is alot healthier than it was a year ago! Thanks to you for that!
Scrubbing bubbles is the worst. I admit to having some SLS shampoo too (not that I use either – I’ll blame my husband for both). Who can be too mad at a husband that actually uses a bathroom cleaner, right? I’m only letting him use what’s left then making him convert to my favorite Bronners. ;0)
my would be something my wife would love
My Olay Quench Plus Age Defying moisturiser is probably the worst product in terms of ingredients in my bathroom. I can’t pronounce any of the words on the ingredient list!
Where do I start?
Drano

Efferdent (my hubby had some teeth knocked out playing basketball)
Sodium perborate is irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Ingestion or absorption through mucous membranes may cause systemic effects on the central nervous system such as irritability, restlessness, headache, agitation, and delirium. Ingestion may also cause anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Local use in the mouth may cause chemical burns and retraction of the gums. Exposure to high doses of sodium perborate may cause adverse liver and kidney effects. Sodium perborate causes mutations and DNA repair damage in bacterial cells.
Etc.
Oh and I still haven’t changed up any of my make-up. Mostly Cover Girl stuff… cover-up, loose powder, eye liner, mascara, lip liner, lipstick.
Hey, at least my shampoo is Burt’s Bees, as well as my chapstick. And my toothpaste is Tom’s of Maine. 🙂
OK, this is worse. John Paul Mitchell baby shampoo. I was given some to help with my son’s cradle cap.

Last summer, with the help of GorgeouslyGreen, I completely overhauled my entire kitchen and bathroom. I carried around my printed copy of all toxic ingredients, as I searched for new, wonderful beauty and health products.
But, I just found an anti-frizz hair cream that my friend left behind this summer, that contains 4 types of parabens…it’s going in the trash!
I’ve been having a hard time greening my beauty products. If it doesn’t have parabens, then it seems to have SLS…
It would be great to try these Tilvee products.
Oh, that’s easy. I’m sad to say, my Chanel make-up…I’m trying to gradually weed it out of my products with natural options but it’s taking some time to find alternative products I love. Perhaps Tilvee can help me do this faster?!
I would have to say it is the classic Baby Oil. I bought a new bottle just before reading Gorgeously Green book and it still sits in the cupboard completely untouched. I am still not sure why i have not thrown it away yet!
My Calvin Klein Euphoria perfume. Nearly everything else has been switched to natural and organic…I need to find a nice alternative to the perfume I like (besides it was a gift from my boyfriend).
cheap drugstore shampoo. it sits there but never gets used anymore.
the toxic product I have is awful bleach, but I will be getting rid of it soon for ever!!
I have a really expensive set of lotion, body wash, and perfume. I’ve never used it, but it was a gift from a close relative so I’m having trouble throwing it out.
The worst I have is a Neutrogena concealer with both methylparaben and propylparaben included. Since there have been studies of linking parabens to breast cancer, I would not like to put my health in jeopardy. I have not been able to find a natural or organic skincare set that cures both my facial oiliness and dryness; so, this would be a great try so that I wouldn’t have to wear any concealer to hide blemishes. Plus, I could show my natural beauty! Thanks for considering me!!
The worst thing I have in my bathroom is my big and sexy hairspray, aerosol of course! My son and husband use it daily, so when it is gone I won’t be buying anymore.
I have switched out all of my toxic stuff. Now if only I could convince my husband…
I thought when I joined the girls club; I was to eliminate all bad stuff; which I did with the help of this web site and Skin so Deep.
I’ve been pretty good about switching over, but I have to say that my handcream(s) meet your criteria, unfortunately… (Would love to try a healthier alternative.) And that bar of shower soap that another family member just won’t give up!
I am ashamed to say I have a bottle of “The Works” toilet cleaner that I am trying to use up, then no more
I’m finishing up some left over toilet bowl cleaner. Otherwise, the bathroom is green.
The worst one I have right now is my dermotologist prescribed for me. I even told him at the time that I was trying to get pregnant. When I got the in the mail from my rx company it said right on it “do not us if pregnant or trying to get pregnant”. I was shocked!
The worst thing (and I hate to admit I used it for years on my lips) is a Mary Kay night cream that is really hydrogentated grease with pink color and fragrance added to it. Blech!!
Worst product would be straight bleach.
Bath and Body Works. Have you ever read the ingredients on that stuff?!
I have preparation H cause I heard it was good for puffy eyes…
The worst thing in my bathroom is Redken Color Extend Shampoo. SLS and lots of other nasty things. Worst part…it’s a 32 ounce bottle!
WoW! Great products! Yippee!
Clorox Bleach. I don’t want to use bleach, but the shower curtain keeps getting moldy…
The badest item is the hair dye. Totally non green!
Probably my Clairol semi-permanent hair color but I also have some shampoo from Lush that I thought was good–but apparently it has SLS in it! Yucky!!
I have perfume that I love but is loaded with BAAAD ingredients. I am trying to wean myself off with organic perfume that I just ordered from Danny Seo. Wish me luck!
Thanks for all you do,
Queenpate
I have some old synthetic estrogen cream.
It’s a miracle and alot of hard days but I’ve been off for three years now. There was a time my body couldn’t function without it but I am proud to say that I am now “synthetic estrogen” free. Yeah!
I have this natural hair smoother that is anything but natural: cyclopenthasiloxane, dimethicone, phenyltrimethicone,
cyclomethicone, isopropyl myristate to name a few.
Bed Head Control Freak Hair Straightener. I’ve had it for a long time but never used it, will part with it soon!
