I stumbled across the most wonderful organic nail salon in Los Angeles called Recess. The thing that seemed almost disconcerting was the lack of odor as I walked in. I’m so used to the usual nail salon smell of acetone and nail polish fumes, that it was quite bizarre. The owner Nidhi, has created a sumptuous salon for the organic diva, complete with little princess-style stations, soft lighting and recycled glass chandeliers. The polishes are my favorite – SpaRitual or Zoya and you get to customize your treatment by picking the scent of your sugar scrub, oil and foot lotion. I only wish that every city across the Nation had a Recess – Nidhi, what about a chain??? Mercifully awareness of the “Big 3-free” has swept across America with women demanding polished that don’t contain the toxic chemicals, formaldehyde, toluene and DBP. These chemicals are especially scary for pregnant women. If you can’t get to a salon like Recess, at least purchase your polish from a non-toxic company and don’t forget a non-toxic polish. It’s also a great idea to take along a bottle of tea tree oil to the salon and add 10 or so drops to the footbath instead of the chemical cocktail that they typically use. Tea Tree oil in antibacterial and anti-fungal.
Finally if you live in LA. Recess is offering an exclusive deal to G.G. members. You get 25% off any treatment (except the express and not to be combined with another offer,) – so if you’re local, make your reservation.
FYI: I had my toes painted with the Zoya color, Blair – which is I’m mad about. It’s vampire magenta with coppery tones – perfect for the fall.
Recess is “NOT” an Organic Nail Spa or even a Natural Nail Spa. The trend of ‘3-Free’ nail polish (Zoya) as an alternative to conventional polish is a step foward for the industry, removing 3 of the “most” toxic ingredients. However, polishes that are simply ‘3-Free’ like the one’s used in Recess still contain dangerously toxic chemicals that pose a health risk to all, from expectant mothers to healthy adults. Only water-based formulas are truly non-toxic.
