INEXPENSIVE ANTI-AGING INGREDIENTS

Anti-aging products can be really expensive and so I was thrilled to see a new study, conducted in the UK, which extolls the incredible anti-aging properties of three easy-to-find and relatively inexpensive ingredients: white tea, witch hazel and Rose.

So how can we use these three ingredients to best effect?

White Tea: White tea is full of antioxidants in the form of polyphenols – more so than any other kind of tea. So drinking 2-4 cups a day is the way to go. I used to find white tea rather tasteless, until I discovered the deep flavor of Silver Needles Tips tea. It’s considered to be one of the finest green teas and if you buy it organic, it is pricey – that said, you can steep it multiple times. I justify the price by remembering how much I used to spend on sugary coffee drinks at the coffee shop. I also love white Peach Tea from Strand Tea. Finally, you can combine two of these anti-aging properties in one by drinking Rose Green Tea.

You can also find skin care products containing white tea extract. My favorite is the White Tea Eye Serum by Neal’s yard.

Witch Hazel: This comes from the North American Witch Hazel shrub and is an astringent typically used to help acne, eczema and numerous skin complaints. I love to use it in my DIY home beauty products, especially in my toners. For a really effective toner, try mixing equal parts of witch hazel and aloe vera juice together. You can buy witch hazel from any drug store and you can find aloe vera juice at most health food stores. I buy my organic aloe vera juice from Trader Joe as a gallon of it is less than eight bucks and I like to drink two ounces every morning.

Rose: I buy dried rose petals from Mountain Rose Herbs and steep them in boiling water to make face creams (recipes in Do It Gorgeously), but you can also buy a small bottle of Rose Essential oil and add a few drops to any face cream you’re currently using.
