DMAE – Anti-Aging Ingredient That Work!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

DMAE is a natural anti-aging ingredient, which is used in Derma e’s wonderful Firming Moisturizer. This cream, which has been formulated especially for loss of firmness in mature skin, is also formulated with Alpha Lipoic and C-Ester. I also noticed that you can purchase it on sale right now from The Vitamin Shoppe for just $19.99 ( a fantastic price for an outstanding product.) I managed to catch up with derma e’s chief formulator to ask her some questions about both their Firming Moisturizer and their Hyaluronic Serum (both of which are great for dryness and sagging.)

What is DMAE, and why is it so important in a “Firming” moisturizer?

DMAE is a compound called dimethylaminoethanol. It has become extremely popular for its skin-firming benefits. Even Dr. Oz has featured a segment on the benefits of crèmes containing DMAE.

Research shows DMAE helps firm, improve tone and tensile strength of skin, and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. DMAE has also demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which can help visibly slow the aging process.

Why is Alpha Lipoic Acid and C-Ester good for sagging skin?

As the universal antioxidant, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is capable of protecting all portions of the skin’s cellular structure and boosts the activity of all other antioxidants. What makes ALA special as an antioxidant is its versatility. It helps deactivate a wide array of cell damaging free radicals and recycles other antioxidants, making them much more effective. In particular, ALA helps protect the mitochondria and our DNA. As we age, mitochondrial function is impaired and this contributes to the adverse effects of aging such as sagging skin.

C-Ester delivers high levels of antioxidant activity and has the ability to recycle other antioxidants such as Vitamin E, making it an excellent anti-aging nutrient. In addition to its role as an antioxidant, C-Ester has another extremely important function in the skin, which is to support collagen health. Collagen is responsible for skin tone and firmness. When collagen breaks down, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin become visible. Research has demonstrated that Vitamin C can actually help stimulate collagen to restore skin’s youthful tone, texture and firmness.

What’s the difference between C-Ester and Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a globally cherished nutrient acclaimed for its remarkable antioxidant properties. C-Ester is a lipid-soluble, stable form of Vitamin C that exhibits greater antioxidant activity than the water-soluble ascorbic acid form.

What is the concentration of these actives in the derma e® product?

The concentrations of our active ingredients is proprietary information.

How do these active ingredients actually penetrate the upper layers of the epidermis?  The epidermis is not as solid as you may think.  These ingredients are able to enter the cellular matrix to deliver benefits to your skin.

Dr. Lester Packer, Founder of Packer Lab at UC Berkley (that specializes in antioxidant research) and author of The Antioxidant Miracle, found that applying antioxidants topically is the fastest way to help support and protect your skin. “Although taking oral supplements will help to boost the amount of antioxidants in your skin, the direct application of antioxidants to the skin is a much faster way to increase the level of antioxidants.”

Hyaluronic Acid just sits on the surface of the skin, right. The only way to get it “in” the skin is to inject it by way of a filler?  Hyaluronic Acid is commonly used as a filler to plump fine lines and wrinkles.  However, applied topically, Hyaluronic Acid can hydrate the skin in a way that no other ingredient can. It is a humectant and has the remarkable ability to attract and bind water molecules to skin. This helps maintain collagen fibers, keeping them moisturized and healthy.  Properly hydrated, healthy collagen means moisturized, plump, youthful looking skin.

Finally, how often should we use this Moisturizer, and can it be used in conjunction with retinoids?

The Firming Moisturizer can be used day and night.

We always recommend addressing your primary skin care concern first.  If loss of firmness and sagging skin is your primary skin care concern, you should choose a DMAE formula.
