Is Sugar Aging?

Is Sugar Aging
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I’m so glad you asked! Now we are on sugar-free week, I can assure you that sugar actually can and will prematurely age you skin. Ever heard of “glycation”? When we eat certain foods (sugar and processed food in particular), their molecules stick to protein and fat molecules in our body without the assistance of a moderating enzyme. The result is a rogue molecule called an AGE. These delightful AGE’s cause protein fibers, such as collagen and elastin, to become stiff and malformed. Remember collagen and elastin diminishes with age regardless, it’s the stuff that makes your skin tight and supple – it needs all the help it can get as we age – seriously!  This is why people who eat a really unhealthy diet (and often drink a lot of sugar in the form or soda and alcohol), have skin that really does get prematurely saggy, and that has an unfortunate yellowish tinge (a sure sign of glycation).

But it’s not too late! Changing your diet to a primarily plant-based whole food diet will go a long way to giving your skin a whole new lease on life. Switching to a healthy diet it one of the greatest preventative steps you can take when it comes to staying gorgeous for good.
