How To Save Your Face in the winter months! You need to take a slightly different approach to your skin care during the cold, winter months because environmental conditions make our skin behave differently. There are a couple of things to take into consideration with cold weather if your want to save your face:

  1. Colder weather is often drier, so the cold air will soak up moisture from your skin.
  2. Most of us are in and out of centrally heated homes & buildings. Central heating parches your skin.

So, allow me to give you a few tips on how to save your face with TLC this winter:

  • Exfoliate less: I advocate exfoliating everyday in normal weather conditions, but when it’s really cold outside, I recommend only exfoliating once or twice a week. Exfoliating in this sense means “mechanical” exfoliation, as in an abrasive agent such as a gritty scrub or an exfoliating brush. Being less aggressive will keep the delicate lipid layer of your skin intact, and thereby minimize chaffing caused by cold winds.
  • Nourish More: Maybe re-think your moisturizer when it’s really cold out. Even if you tend toward an oily skin, you need a really hydrating moisturizer, which will keep what little moisture you have intact. Look for products which contain skin-loving butters, and cold-pressed plant oils. Check out the moisturizers I love in my latest free e-book.
  • Don’t Forget the C: Remember that Vitamin C protects your skin from environmental damage. Use a really stable formulation in the form of a serum every morning after cleansing and before moisturizing.
  • Gentle Retinol: If  you use a retinol product, you might want to switch to a more gentle form during the winter months. I love Mychelle’s Remarkable Retinal Serum, because it contains Retinaldehyde, which is a precursor to Retinol, and thus way more gentle.
  • Protect: Don’t forget an SPF in the winter. The UV rays are still very much present, and so you need a good mineral SPF. I like to use a BB cream, which gives me the moisture, the coverage, and the protection. I love Suntegrity’s 5-in-1 BB cream.
