85863166I love working out at home! My living room, kitchen, the local park are all perfect for some of the exercies I regularly do (check out the Fitness plan in The Gorgeously Green Diet). Here’s why it works for me: It takes much less time and given the fact that time-wise I’m maxed out, I can easily carve out 15- 30 minutes a day, whereas 2 hours (back and forth to gym or exercise class), is often too much to ask. Also, when faced with the prospect of working out, if I know I only have to do 15 minutes, I just do it and often keep going for longer, whereas if I’m faced with an hour or so session, I’ll totally procrastinate. Other advantages to working out at home are that it’s more eco-friendly: You’re not driving, or having to buy a plastic water bottle because your reusable one is still under the kitchen sink. If your home workout is outside, you get to connect with nature while exercising, which is the perfect scenario. Remember that any woman over the age of 30 should really be exercising every single day and that exercise should include some cardio, weight-bearing exercise, and stretching. I’ve had the greatest fun with Workout DVDs. Some are boring and some just plain awful, and I’ve had to try a few to find the ones that really work. My top pick is The Bar Method. All you need is a chair (to act as the bar), and a sense of humor. My session is often accompanied by a running commentary by my 8-year-old daughter, who finds the whole thing hysterically funny. I just ignore her and Phoebe the dog, who wants to join in, and get on with it. After 8-10 sessions of The Bar Method, you will indexsee a difference. Also, once you get the hang of it, you can pick and choose your chapters. If I’ve only got 20 minutes, I’ll just forward to the stomach (killer) and “seat” section. First time I did these, I could barely sit on the toilet the next day! Good to know that this method is also favored by many celebrities, including Drew Barrymore.

I also love the Zumba workout, especially if you get a friend to join. You’ll work up a sweat, while attempting this Latin-style workout and the abs of all the Zumba girls will have you working overtime.

Walking the dog, a bicycle ride to the store or doing some tricep dips on the park bench all count.

Equally important is yoga/stretching, as we get less flexible by the day as we get older! I highly recommend the DVD’s from our Dream Team guest blogger, Natasha Rizopoulos.
