Aside from my feet killing me (my feet feet are a little more used to Birkenstocks than they are to 6″ heels,) I had an amazing time at the EMA awards last night. The Environmental Media Association began in 1989, and for 23 years had been working tirelessly to communicate and inspire eco ideas through media.
The awards show was their way of celebrating people who have made a huge difference in the past year. Jessica Alba won the brand new Green Parent Award. She launched The Honest Company this year because she felt it was vital for mothers to be able to buy safe, effective and affordable products for their babies. Jessica’s Ah HA moment was when her first baby was chewing a disposable diaper – she took it upon herself to find out exactly what was in that diaper and her findings appalled her enough to begin her new mission.
The gorgeous Danny DeVito came up to accept the award for the best message in a feature film. Of course, The Lorax won and in his speech, Danny berated any attendee who did not drive a hybrid or plug-in car. He had a point – there weren’t many at the awards who couldn’t afford to buy whichever plug-in they choose – so Danny felt there were no excuses. Oh – and Danny said he drives a Nissan Leaf. Toyota and EMA have partnered for the past 12 years, and Toyota unveiled they new 2013 plug-in models.
Of the documentary film nominees, a film called Chasing Ice won. Chimpanzee and Last Call at The Oasis were also nominees. Of the 3, I’ve only seen Chimpanzee (LOVED!), however, I’m now dying to see the other two.
Kelly Chapman Meyer won the lifetime achievement award. This woman is a powerhouse in Hollywood. She’s one of those ladies who gets things done and the list is what she’s managed to push to fruition it too long to write, however, she most recently co-founded the American Heart Association’s “Teaching Gardens”, which strives to eliminate childhood obesity.
Daryl Hannah looked stunning, and as usual was firing on 6 cylinders. This blonde bombshell is unstoppable in her force to fight environmental destruction.
After the show, we spent the evening tottering around sampling food from a number of local booths – my favorite being The Real Food Daily booth, manned by the brilliant Ann Gentry herself. If you don’t know Ann or her vegan restaurants, I urge you to grab one of her family-friendly vegan cookbooks – they are truly the best.
Finally, with bellies full of blueberry bread pudding (hello!!!) and bags full of bamboo cutting boards and Green Works new compostable cleaning wipes, my husband and I jumped into my trusty 2012 Prius (thank goodness, after Danny DeVito’s tirade,) and headed home feeling so grateful that the EMA exists.
