A dirty grill freaks me out big time, but I’m not going to poison myself with those nasty commercial cleaners! It’s important to know how to clean our BBQ without the use of toxic chemicals. You can also save a lot of money because most of the sprays that purport to clean your grill are very expensive. This recipe works like a charm.

You will need:

  • A roll of aluminum foil
  • A large bag of baking soda
  • A box of cheap table salt.
  • A few old rags
  • A wire brush
  • A BBQ steel brush

1.The key to a clean grill is that you maintain a clean/non-greasy drip pan. Most grills have a grill pan underneath that catches the drips. Some grills then house a little cup that the drips pour into. Either way, remove your grill pan  and take  it to the kitchen sink.

2. Make a mixture of equal parts salt and baking soda in a small bowl. Add enough water to make a thick paste and using a wire brush, scrub your grill pan clean. Rinse with hot water. Dry it well with a rag.

3. Take a sheet of aluminum foil and fit it to the drip pan, making sure it fits perfectly. You may have to make a hole with your fingers over the hole in the pan.

4. Pour a 1/2 inch layer of baking soda evenly over the foil. This will make the next time to clean-up, very easy.

5. Replace grill drip pan.

6. Now remove the actual grates and clean them in the same way you cleaned the drip tray.

7. The key to keeping the grill plates clean is to do the following: When you are done grilling and the grill is off,  but the grill is still warm (not HOT), completely dampen one or two large rags (old sheets are best) and lay them across the grates for a few seconds. Agitate them along the bars of the grates with a long wire BBQ brush. You’ll see that all the grease and gunk will easily come off. Dispose of the rags.
