5 Uses for Manuka Honey

5 Uses for Manuka Honey
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I’ve been obsessed with Manuka Honey ever since my daughter was 3 years-old, and it was the only thing that I managed to find to soothe her throat when she had a cold. Then, last year my father got a bad infection on his arm, which despite the use of numerous anti-biotic creams, wouldn’t heal. My mom remembered that I’d told her about the healing powers of Manuka Honey, so she slathered his arm with it and 2 days later, it began to rapidly heal!

So, what is this miraculous-sounding honey? It comes from New Zealand, where the bees feed off the Native Manuka bush. Most honey contains antibacterial properties, however, Manuka Honey contains Methylglyoxal (MGO), which is a  major antibacterial agent. Manuka honey is rated with the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) system, which indicates whether or not the honey is “active.” Honey that is tested and verified to have an antibacterial property level of 10 or more is given a UMF rating and is then called “active.”  I try to buy Manuka honey that is “bio-active” 12+ or higher. It’s expensive, but a little goes a very long way.

If you are looking for a reputable brand, I love Wedderspoon.

Manuka honey is thicker and darker than other honey, and has a very intense flavor. Here 5 uses:

  1. Breakfast: I love to eat Manuka for breakfast because it tastes so good! I either smear a little on toast ( a little goes a long way,) or I top my oatmeal with a teaspoon.
  2. Sore Throat: If you are suffering from a sore throat, try either sucking on 1/2 tsp of Manuka, and/or dissolve 1 tsp in a cup of Traditional Medicinals Tea.
  3. Face Mask: If you have acne, or inflamed skin, this simple mask might be just what you are looking for. Simply mix 1/8 tsp of cinnamon into 3 tsps of Manuka Honey. Spread all over your face. Leave for 10 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.
  4. Wounds, bites and cuts: Apply topically to the wound, bite or cut. It can also be used in minor burns.
  5. Hair Mask: This is an amazing hot oil mask, which will totally revitalize dry and damaged hair: Place 3tbsp olive oil and 3 tbsp Manuka honey in a small bowl. Microwave for 20 seconds. Apply all over hair, making sure you massage it into your scalp. Leave for 15 minutes, and then shampoo with a sulphate-free shampoo.
