Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) – also known as “wolfberries” – have been used in India and around Asia for thousands of years to support sleep, energy, aging, vision, liver and kidney function. They are packed with powerful antioxidants that rival the well-known acai berry of Brazil.
In one study, 35 healthy adults were randomly assigned to drink either 120ml of goji berry juice a day or a placebo.
Based on a subjective evaluation, the subjects were rated on markers of memory, fatigue, mental acuity, sleep, and aspects of physical health before and after drinking the controlled beverage.
After two weeks, the goji berry group felt significantly better in the areas of:
- Energy
- Sleep
- Mental focus
- Mental acuity
- Calmness
- Happiness
- Overall health
- Gastrointestinal function
In the placebo group, significant improvements were only noted in happiness and, interestingly, a reduction in heartburn.
You can buy Goji berries from most health food stores, and add them to smoothies, granola, oatmeal, or just eat them raw (like you would a raisin!)
