Want to take the guesswork out of vitamins and supplements? It is as simple as taking the 3-minute lifestyle quiz on HumNutrition.com. Dr. Carl Keen and Dr. Robert Hackman of UC Davis’s nutrition lab created the quiz to give insight into what YOUR body is missing. A HUM nutritionist reviews your data and recommends products from the extensive HUM line. Then you can sign up to have your products delivered every 4 weeks, for a reasonable price per bottle. Sound awesome and simple? That’s because it is.
I was lucky enough to try out four supplements that I was recommended based on my diet, lifestyle, and stress levels. Check out the website for more information and to scope out all of the formulas Hum Nutrition has to offer. I will go into some detail below about the four products I have been taking over the last month.
Red Carpet
The catch phrase for this one goes “Want to be the fairest of them all? No more need to kill Snow White”. Clever! What girl doesn’t want what this little bottle promises: shiny hair, healthy skin, and strong nails? I was in desperate need. My hair grows fast but not strong, I have some broken strands and split ends that I would like to vanquish. The 140 milligrams of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) is a key component to this formula, recommended as a treatment for thinning hair, dandruff, folliculitis, and brittle nails and hair. GLA is found naturally in black currant oil, which is the main ingredient in the Red Carpet. GLA works best when combined with a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids from sources like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts. Good thing I love all of those! Alpha Linolenic Acid is also included in the formula, and found naturally in walnuts and vegetable oils such as flaxseed or canola. It plays a critical role in the skin’s appearance, and can protect against the damaging effects of sunlight. Very important.
I am happy to say that my hair, skin and nails look better than ever after a month of taking this formula. I even had a person tell me yesterday I looked “beautiful and fresh”. I’ll take it!
Uber Energy
I was excited to start taking this energy supplement. My nutritionist commented that my answers to the quiz (that I suffer from low energy, energy spurts throughout the day, sleep like a rock) pointed to adrenal fatigue. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are morning fatigue, afternoon lows, bursts of energy, decreased ability to handle stress, and lightheadedness, among others. Our adrenal glands secrete over 50 hormones necessary for energy production and the balance of our immune systems. Constant “flight or fight” stressors cause our adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol and adrenaline, leaving them wiped out. The Uber Energy formula has Vitamins C and B-6, along with a collection of energizing herbs including Eleuthero, Ashwagandha and Rhodiola. I did some research on these herbs and they are said to help your ability to concentrate and your memory as well.
I’m a busy girl, with a full time job spent at the computer most of the time. I need a consistent amount of energy to not burn out. I am happy with this formula because I know I am helping take a load off my adrenal glands. Taking deep breaths, breaks from the computer to step out into the sunshine, and exercising help me keep my stress levels under control.
Omega The Great
People have been talking about Omega-3 fish oils and whether or not we really need to take them as part of a healthy lifestyle. The active ingredients in fish oil have been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, helping maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure and promoting joint, brain, and skin health. Our bodies need Omega-3s, but cannot produce them. Many people need them supplemented since they do not get enough essential fatty acids in their diet. The Omega The Great formula sources their oils from small fish like sardines, mackerels, and anchovies. I know that sounds yucky, but I promise, there are no fishy burps or smells! 800 mg of Omega-3 EPA and 400mg of Omega-3 DHA definitely give you a boost.
Moody Bird
Anybody else out there suffer from unbearable moodiness around that time of the month? I feel like I am on a rollercoaster of emotions sometimes, and I never know when the drop is coming or I might be flipped upside down! My Hum Nutritionist recommended the Moody Bird formula, which is simply Chaste Berry Extract and Dong Quai root. Chaste Berry is amazing! Sometimes called “the women’s herb” it helps normalize hormonal balance and has been widely researched due to its reputation to alleviate the symptoms of PMS. You should take it not only at that time of the month, but every day to keep your hormones balanced.
