HOMELAND BANS PARABENS!

Today I’m feeling very proud to be half Danish because Denmark is the first country to ban parabens in lotions and other cosmetic products for children under the age of three. This was just announced last week, and the ban covers propyl and butylparaben. These chemical preservatives should frankly be banned in all skin care products for women of all ages because they disrupt your entire endocrine system, which can lead to serious health issues later in life. As I’ve always said, a few applications of toxic chemical-laden products won’t land you in the hospital – many of us have been using them for years. However, I strongly believe that years of using these many chemicals (on average women use slather on over 126 questionable chemicals a day), can have very serious health implications and substantially add to your “Body Burden”.

What’s a “Body Burden?” you may ask. It refers to the amount of synthetic (and potentially toxic), chemicals that are stored in your fat. No one escapes this burden. Even newborns are have a “Body Burden”, as it’s been discovered that these chemicals go straight from mom’s blood into the placenta, which feeds the unborn baby.

There is hope, however, and there’s an awful lot we can do to minimize our exposure. The first thing is to STOP plastering on toxic lotions, potions, and cosmetics. I’ve been working tirelessly for the past 5 years to find alternatives that perform as well, if not better, than their toxic counterparts.

But let’s focus on babies and toddlers for the minute. Come on all you moms out there – these little guys are especially vulnerable. Their delicate skin absorbs everything that’s put onto it and given that most drugstore baby products contain a plethora of questionable chemicals, it’s time to commit to a clean alternative. Grab a copy of Do It Gorgeously, and you can learn how to make all your own baby products (diaper cream and wipes too,) for a fraction of the cost of a store-bought products.

The situation becomes even more scary for tweens and teens. A recent study found all kinds of potentially carcinogenic chemicals in the blood of a group of teens that were tested. The origin of these chemicals were found to be skin care products, which many teens start to use in abundance: body sprays, perfumes, nail polish, deodorants, heavily scented body lotions and shampoos. Ugh – how awful that these girls believe that they are taking care of themselves – trying to make themselves more beautiful – when in reality, they’re harming themselves.

So follow Denmark’s lead and opt for pure, natural products for baby and clean cosmetics for your tween/teen. Here are some products I love. Some of these can be a little more pricey than drugstore products, but you can choose to pay now or later!

  1. Before you get too carried away with excitement, you may wish to consider the FACTS. This is still only a proposal, and it only covers propylparaben and butylparaben. AND it is only a temporary ban, should it be passed, until such evidence is provided that these parabens do not mimic oestrogen.
