Hair dye can be horribly toxic – so what’s a girl to do?? Being Gorgeously Green means scrutinizing each and every product we use, making sure it is safe for us and the planet. Conventional hair dyes contain ammonia and other chemicals that can adversely affect your health, however, it can be tough to find a good alternative that looks really fabulous. Thank Goodness for Susan Henry, owner of Shades Salon in Los Angeles and even more thanks for the fact that her non-toxic, 100% ammonia-free dyes are now available online.
Susan has been a colorist for 30 years and wound up getting sick from the ammonia-based dyes she was using. When her daughter went to college up near the Redwoods in Northern California, she met some botanists who took her through the forests and showed her how to create and use natural dyes. So her health got better and now her salon has a huge following.
Go visit her website www.shadesnaturalcolor.com and give her non-toxic dyes a try – you won’t regret it.
I’m so excited about our new message board, which is already very active. Please keep asking away and somebody, somewhere will have just the answer you are looking for!
I love Susan’s hair color! She’s been coloring my hair for over 4 years now and my once broken off, fried ammonia-treated hair is now healthy, silky and long. Loving her new product line of soaps, oils & lotions as well.
I am so pleased that you are sharing information about this wonderful product. I have used Susan’s natural hair color for years, and as a cancer survivor, using her product has become an important part of my health and recovery program. My hair turned white after my treatment and believe it or not this hair color is not only healthy for me and my hair, but it also covers the grey!!!! I want other women to have a healthy alternative and Susan’s product is it.
Susan has been coloring my hair for years and because of her great products my hair is long, healty and feels great!
Thank you Susan!!
I love Shades, Susan, and her fabulous hair color. It saved me from going completely white. I had terrible hives for almost two years before I met Susan and she told me it was my traditional hair color that was making me sick. For the last 9 years Susan has made me look terrific and my hives disappeared IMMEDIATELY. I tell everyone I know. Not only is her hair color amazing, she is a true artist with color. I love it.
I’ve been using Susan’s wonderful ammonia-free hair colors for awhile now and they’re great! My experience at Shades Salon is always very pleasant because there are no toxic fumes in the air; her colors are beautiful and warm and yet completely cover the grey in my hair. Thank you, Susan, for creating this wonderful line – I appreciate your excellent products and also the friendly atmosphere of your salon.
I have been using susan’s hair color for several years and I love it. I buy the kit every month and do it myself and even top hairstylist in la comment how great my color is. I am always proud to say it is home made and all natural!
Thanks susan!!!!!
I’ve been a client of Susan’s for 2+ years. I started seeing her when I was pregnant with my daughter, because I was worried about the harsh chemicals associated with traditional hair coloring methods. I love Susan’s natural product, my hair color is great and it really covers my gray!
As a 40-something trend analyst, I’m often in the public eye and when those stubborn grey roots sprout unexpectedly, I rush to SHADES in the 90210 for Susan’s expert color matching and gentle, non-toxic formulas. This product is amazing and the uberluxe scalp massages are 2DYE4…..!!!
I’ve been to Susan and loved the colour and the fact that I didn’t smell toxic for a week. It was a lovely experience all around
Does anyone know a list of “Green” hair salons that use eco friendly products? I live in Virginia and the only place I have found is a Aveda certified salon. Do you know if that is considered organic products? Their website does not say. Thanks
I LOVE Susan’s all natural hair color! I’ve been covering my stubborn grays with it for years. Susan’s color lasts just as long as the chemical brands, if not longer. The minute you sit down in her chair she rubs delicious lavender oil in your scalp to prep you. When that aromatherapy hits your nose, you know you’re in for a unique hair coloring experience. When you go into Shades, don’t forget to have a gloss done after your color. Your color will look even more fantastic and your hair will thank you for it.
I love these hair colors. They are natural and don’t smell strong like ammonia based products do. They cover my grey too!
Have never used Susans hair color, but have had great luck with robert craig hair color, it is not only ammonia free but also peroxide free! Mixes easly with plain water. http://www.robertcraig.com
Just bought “tints of nature” at Whole Foods, haven’t used it yet, but it looks promising – it is ammonia free.
Amonia free is what I look for.
I use Tints of Nature which I buy at my local health food store, New Frontiers, or you can get it online as well. Works great and when I go to the salon other stylists rave about the color and then my hairdresser comments that I do my own color. You could take this to your hairdresser to have them apply it for you.
Do you have an outlet in Sydney Austrlia for your products.Anywhere in Australia????
Cheers
Sharon
A relaxer system for ethnic hair (african roots) that is natural has proven difficult at best. The Phyto Specific Line seems great at first impressions however the fourth ingredient in two of the main components is on the Orange List – Propylene Glycol. Any help you can offer besides going natural and not being able to get a comb through my hair thereafter! I am also looking for something for my young daughter’s hair where I don’t have to worry about added estrogen.
I’ve already sent this question to the general inquiries section but just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas: In the first chapter mentioning disposing of beauty products that have hazardous ingredients, is there a proper place to dispose the materials? Also, is there a particular method? In other words, I don’t want the chemicals to go somewhere else, like in the water or in a landfill. Any suggestions? I would love to know before throwing them in the dumpster!
I ordered the Hair Dye and they upsold me on the Natural Shampoo and Conditioner. The ingredients in the shampoo include Propylparaben, frangrence, methylparaben. The conditiner has the same plus PEG-45M. Needless to say they will be returned. Sorry Susan these are no, no’s in our non-toxic home.
I just bought Light Mountain NATURAL “Color the Gray” hair color by Lotus Brands. Has anyone used this product? The ingredients are Lawsonia inermis (henna) leaf powder, Indigoferae tinctoria (indigo) leaf powder. I’ll post my results after I use it in a couple of weeks.
