There’s such a recent to-do about bio-identical hormones – especially since Oprah hosted Suzanne Sommer’s on her show last week. As many of you probably saw, Suzanne is a huge advocate for bio-identical hormone creams and definitely likes a supplement or two! I believe that beauty starts from the inside and that without good nutrition and balanced hormones, we cannot expect to have gorgeous, youthful skin. The hard fact is that our hormones are assulted everyday by hormone-mimiking chemicals (parabens being one of them,) so getting them back into balance is no easy task. The first step would be to make sure you are minimizing your exposure to these disturbing chemical as much possible and if you’re a Gorgeously Green girl, I suspect you will have done exactly that. The second step, as Dr. Christiane Northrup suggests, is to get your hormones tested to see what you are dealing with. If you find that some, or all of your hormones are very low, I suggest looking for a reputable doctor who advocates the use of bioidentical hormones. The most important thing is to find a doctor or naturapath who gets their bio-identicals from a pharmacy thatuses a non-toxic cream in which to suspend the hormones. Many of these pharmacies use creams that contain parabens and inflammatory chemicals, which defeat the purpose of the cream in the first place. I always love the advice of Dr Julia Tatum-Hunter. She contributed to the supplement section in The Gorgeously Green Diet and is an expert on bio-identical hormones. She gives a wonderful daily supplement plan in the book and the great news is, that you don’t need to take 60 pills a day. The key is to walk the middle ground and do the best you can with the time and budget limitations that many of us have.
I love Dr Northrup and how she is getting the information out there. I have an article worth reading at http://www.menopausecoach.com/home/2009/6/7/hormones.html about Dr Randolph Jr. who is the Medical Director of the Natural Hormone Institute. You may have to copy and paste into your browser. I am really enjoying this Gorgeously Green site and all of the wonderful information. Thanks.
