4 NATURAL DEODORANTS THAT REALLY WORK!

Having testing most of the natural brands on the market, I’ve found 4 Natural Deodorants that really work! And when I say “work”, they do a great job of keeping me dry and smelling sweet.

Keep in mind that a “natural” or non-toxic deodorant will not stop you sweating completely, and this is because they don’t contain the sweat-blocking ingredient that most drugstore brands contain. This “anti-perspirant” ingredient is typically aluminum salts. These salts block your sweat glands and thus prevent you from sweating. They are often in formulas with a lot of other less-than-healthy ingredients too.

I will mention here that contrary to popular belief, there has been every little scientific evidence (conclusive studies) to date, which link these aluminum salts to either Alzheimer’s or cancer. Many of the early studies, which made this correlation have now been disproven. That said, on an instinctive level, it doesn’t feel right to use aluminum salt in the delicate area where lymph nodes abound. Our lymphatic system is how we detox, so to block this process seems unhealthy. I sense there’s more to come from the medical community on this one.

What we do know for sure, is that other ingredients such as artificial perfume (in most deodorants), and parabens, are an issue. Let’s NOT smear our underarms with these questionable ingredients. If you are going for a regular sweat-blocking anti-perspirant (sometimes we have to), at least choose one that is unscented.

My 4 natural deodorants that really work are scented naturally, or not at all. So, take your pick:

Simply Divine Botanicals : Keeping Abreast Of It: If there is only one natural personal care product you purchase this year, this should be it! I wish I’d discovered this years ago. I’ve always love Simply Divine Botanicals, but had never tried their deodorant, which I’ve just found out is their bestseller. It’s a deodorant “with a purpose” because it encourages lymphatic drainage, while keeping you sweet-smelling. Aside from the lymphatic drainage thing, this deodorant really works! I’ve worn it every day for the past week (and it’s 90 degrees here at the moment), and no stinky sweat at all – nothing short of a miracle. They also have a companion product with is a lymphatic drainage cream  – it’s actually more like a thick paste that you apply at night. So, that’s my new regime – paste and night and spray in the morning.
Herbal Magic: When I wrote my first book, I tried about 50 natural deodorants and the only one that did a good enough job (that I could use when public speaking etc) was Herbal Magic. I’ve recommended it hundred of women since and had no complaints. It comes in 1 of 3 scents: Jasmine, Lavender or unscented.

Tom’s Of Maine Unscented Original Care: This is a simple deodorant for the man or woman who wants a basic and not-at-all-fancy deodorant. My husband has sworn by this specific deodorant for years. If I buy him anything else, he complains. He says the texture is great for men with hairy pits, because it’s not sticky and does a really good job.

Schmidt’s Underarm Paste has a cult following. One of the makeup artists on set, Lacey, swears by the stuff. So much so, her boyfriend now uses it too. The Cedarwood + Juniper is my fave scent: woody and fresh.

  1. Have you ever tried Bubble & Bee deodorants? The creams are the best! It can take a week or two for your body adjust and if it doesn’t then they have others that you can try until you find the right one for YOUR body chemistry. Bonus…they are certified organic so they really are all natural. After reading the Tom’s ingredients (I give them props for being more natural then most brands) I wouldn’t say they were natural enough for me. I don’t work for B&B so this is no plug….I’m just a seriously happy buyer of their products!

  2. Darlene Lattimer

I have tried one of these don’t work so I made my own powder deodrant. I have been using it for the last past four months and it works great can not believe it.

  3. Hi, thanks for this article. I’ve been searching for a good natural deodorant and haven’t had any luck yet.

I check my cosmetics against the Good Guide for their health ratings. Tom’s of Maine got a 4 (medium concern) out of 10 for health and Herbal Magin got a 5 out of 10. Simply Divine was not listed.

How do you evaluate what’s a natural product? Are you concerned about any of the ingredients that Good lists as being a problem?

Thanks in advance for your response.

    1. I evaluate based on my own research. I don’t go by the main databases (Good Guide and Skin Deep) because their information is not always accurate. I take all the hazards of ingredients very seriously, and then I make a decision based on whether I would use the product (and I’m very fussy!) or not.
