I can’t believe the time has come – summer is winding down and some of us already have our kids back to school. My daughter goes back next week, so I’m getting her kitted up in the greenest way possible.
I’m getting her a fantastic school supply kit from The Green Office. You can get grade-appropriate kits with all non-toxic crayons, recycled paper – the lot!
A backpack from eBags.
I always pack her a waste-free lunch box. You can find some cute and inexpensive lead-free lunch boxes at Oompa and then make sure you pack sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers. You can buy a very inexpensive set from Target (just remember to buy plastic that doesn’t have #7 in the chasing arrows on the bottom of the container). Always pack reusable flatware and a cloth napkin and of course a non-leaching water bottle. I like the selection of water bottles at Reusable Bags.
I try to avoid any individually-wrapped portions (string cheese, carrots & ranch) and instead I make sure I have loads of tiny reusable containers for dips/nuts etc.
I have also started to pack waste-free lunch boxes. I recently purchased 2 laptop lunchbox systems from http://www.laptoplunches.com and I love them! I initially got one (from my local Wegman’s store) for my son who’s going back to daycare while I teach. Then after buying his I thought ‘Hey, I’m tired of buying lunches every other day.’ and I bought one for myself. I can’t wait until school starts in two weeks so I can start to use my lunchbox at my school! I hope my family can begin to eat healthier in a more eco-friendly way and that I become a lunch influence to everyone around me.
