A new study has found that diets rich in soy protein, nuts and other ldl (bad) – cholesterol lowering foods work better than diets low in saturated fat in the combat against high cholesterol. The study examined the effect of 3 different diets, a routine diet portfolio, intensified diet portoflio and control diet, on ldl-cholesterol levels.
The portfolio diet contained cholesterol lowering foods (plant sterols, soy protein, viscous fibres and nuts) whereas theh control diet was healthy and high in fibre and who grain products but lacked the cholesterol lowering foods.
Ther results showed that both the portfolio diets lowered the ldl-cholesterol levels significantly more that did the control diet. The researchers, from St. Michael’s hsopital and University of Tornto state “this study indicated a potential value of using a combination cholesterol lowering foods”.
I was thrilled to hear this, as I’m not a proponent of low-fat foods. I think it’s more important to eat a diet of “real” and minimally-processed foods.
The main foods that lower your bad cholesterol come as no surprise: plant proteins such as soy and the grains we’ve always known about like oats and barley – check out this list of 14 foods which will help to lower your cholesterol.
