Why not create an extraordinary Easter this year by delivering an eco-friendly message along with your basket? Since Easter falls bang in the middle of Earth Month this year, it’s fitting to think about the bigger picture and make sure that our celebrations are Gorgeously Green. A wicker basket is a great idea – especially one that you can use again during the year as a napkin or fruit basket. Fill your basket with greenery from your yard or purchase an inexpensive bunch of greenery from your local flower shop. What to put in the basket?
My daughter prefers toys to chocolate, so I’ll throw in some non-toxic paints and art supplies from Eco Kid USA, and this year I’m going to put in the new Barbie movie, Thumbelina – yes for all you Barbie enthusiasts out there, as usual, our blonde girly girl is reflective of the times and so is delivering a wonderful eco-message through the old and timeless tale of Thumbelina. The tag-line is “Even the smallest person can make a big difference” says it all! It’s a movie that the whole family can enjoy together. If you really want to push the boat out, Barbie has come out with some adorable dolls to go with the movie. They are all packaged in 100% recyclable boxes and help even a tiny child to be green.
To celebrate Earth Month, Barbie is challenging kids across the country to do something special for their environment this April. Enter here to receive a free packet of Thumbelina flower seeds. Spreading the message that the even the smallest person can make a big difference, Barbie encourages kids to plant all 1,000 packets of seeds in April.
What about the chocolate egg aspect? If you can, go organic with a pack of eggs from Kate’s Caring gifts, but whatever you do, avoid buying those plastic eggs in which to hide candy for the ubiquitous hunt. They are totally unnecessary and often get thrown in the trash. Last year I made homemade fudge, wrapped a few squares of it in kerchiefs and hid the colorful bundles around the yard. The kids were thrilled as they after the fudge was eaten (in 3 seconds flat), they wrapped the kerchiefs around their heads as bandanas or their wrists.
With Spring on it’s way, Easter is a time of renewal and hope and it’s a great time to talk to our kids and loved ones about the need to care about our planet as never before. I look forward to hearing about your Easter preparations too.
It is nice to hear that an age old girl’s favorite, Barbie, can be helpful in teaching our children about living green. Thank you for the details of the video. It’ll be a great addition for the Easter basket.
During this time of the year, we like to reuse the cardboard type egg cartons to start seeds in for our veggie garden. It is a wonderful spring children’s
activity.
nice to see that Barbie has a msg for my girls. We love to plant flower this time of the year. thank for the tip.
love the egg hunt idea. i know it will be hard for the in-laws to break out of their plastic egg tradition, but it will be nice to start our own eco-friendly tradition. thanks!
While I can’t condone anything to do with Barbie for reasons too numerous to go into here, I am glad to hear about the seeds.
I don’t have any kids at home but I am having company for Easter and plan on dying eggs using old silk scarves and ties. Youjust use vinegar and boiling water, wrap the eggs in a piece of the silk, then muslim, and boil gently for 20 minutes. Once the eggs are cool, put a small amount of olive oil on them and rub with a soft cloth. They are beautiful. I saw this on Martha Stewart and it works great! You get the pattern from the silk on the eggs. You can use ties, scarves, blouses, anything silk with pretty patterns and colors.
My daughter had one of the first Barbies and still has it all thes years later.
I agree with not getting the plastic eggs aand always like to dye the real eggs and then use them for deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches Easter night.
My kids saw the Thumbelina movie and I must say it was moving. The story was all about saving the earth and the values of earth and family. it even has a bit about parents and cell phones and paying more attention to your children, the toys that they are putting out are also solar powered with gardening as an activity. So way to Go Barbie ! and Gorgeously Green for getting it out there.
When I was a kid I used to take Barbie on Field Trips out into the woods and she would have picnics and go swimming…I am excited she is now playing her part to make the world a safer, more earth conscious place.
Delighted to hear about the movie . My daughter had one of the first Barbie’ and still has it 50 years later. I hope my granddaughter will get a movie in her basket
I love to dye real boiled eggs and then use them on Easter night for egg salad sandwiches.
Going green for Easter! What a great idea and having Barbie as a spokesperson is a good way of getting our young girls in the spirit of being gorgeously green.
