Donate Your Bra

Do you have any bra’s stuffed away in the back of your lingerie drawer, that you rarely or never wear? I’ve got two or three that sit unused because I grabbed them in a sale but didn’t really take the time to check that they fit perfectly. I tend to reach for one of my two favorite bra’s and the rest get virtually unused. I hate to throw them out because I can’t toss them in my recycle bin (they don’t accept underwear of clothing), and I couldn’t bear to send them along with my kitchen garbage to the the landfill.

Yes, I could give them to friends, but it’s frankly a bit embarrassing to ask a bunch of friends if they want a an old, but new bra! Bras are personal. There’s also the collection of barely-used bras that many of us have stuffed away – maybe we’ve lost or gained weight and they no longer fit properly.  When I recently purchased a bra from Bloomingdales, the sales assistant gave me one of those reward cards and told me that if I purchased ten bras, I’d get one free. “When would I purchase ten bras?” I asked incredulously. She told me the card is good for a couple of years and to remember that I should toss my bra after 6 months! What?????? The bra cost me fifty bucks and she’s telling me that it’s only good for 6 months! Good try…even if that bra slightly loses it’s shape after multiple washes, I’m not tossing it after only 6 months. It made me so mad that I’m now religious about hand washing all my bras in cold water and super-gentle detergent. I had gotten a little cavalier tossing them in the washing machine.

Anyway, I digress. My point is that if you have any bra’s hanging around – new or gently used, you can put them to good use rather than toss them into the great pit in the earth. Go The Bra Recyclers and you can either find out where your nearest drop-off location is, or you can download a mail-in form. They will distribute your bra to someone who really needs it.

You could also send your gently-used bras to Free The Girls. This is an amazing organization that helps women to get their lives back together after being freed from sex trafficking. If there is anything I can ever do to help these women, who are often sold into trafficking aged 8-10, I will do it. It makes me want to go to Victoria’s Secret and buy a bunch of sale bras to send in – maybe I will! You can also host a bra-drive or bra donation event at your local church, school or even at your home. It’s amazing how many women have bras tucked away that they never use – so let’s help them to help others.
