African Cold Remedy

I’ve traveled to some amazing places in Africa. These cultures have time-tested remedies that depend on natural ingredients.  A friend shared this amazing cold remedy that is used throughout central Africa. It is an effective alternative to those super sugary hot lemon drinks.  I drink this concoction whenever I feel a sore throat coming on and it does the trick.  It is simple, potent, and it works! [did I mention it is potent?!]

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups water
  • 2 limes cut into quarters and squeezed (with rind)
  • 3-4 tbsp grated ginger (or as much as you can handle)
  • ¼ tsp sea salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium sauce pan add water, limes, ginger, sea salt
  2. Bring ingredients to a boil until the rind of the limes becomes a pale green
  3. Strain the mixture through a strainer or cheese-cloth and into a mug
  4. Add raw honey as needed and enjoy before bed.

Directions: Drink 1 full cup right before bed, pile on some heavy blankets and sleep for as long as you can.

  1. I know a very similar remedy that I use when I’m starting to get sick. Just that instead of the ginger and salt I add cinnamon to the boiling water and some orange juice too, apart from that everything is just the same. You should try it too, it really helps.

  2. Sophie! I love this remedy. I have never heard it before and I am going to try it the next time I get a scratch in my throat. Do you think its too strong for children?

    Thanks!
