The thought of rubbing toxic chemicals into my body or scalp is bad enough, but when it comes to a baby – it’s horrendous. Little babies are now bombarded with chemicals the moment they make their entrance, and this realization was one of the catalysts that catapulted me head first into the Green space almost a decade ago. My daughter, Lola (just turned 9,) is now very savvy when it comes to reading ingredient lists on bottles and lotions, which is fortunate because those little fingers are already dipping into every glittery lip balm pot she can get them into! It’s actually so much fun, because while researching/experimenting for Do It Gorgeously, she got to help me try out many of the skin care and particularly baby care recipes – she figured she’s got a much better idea if a baby would like the scent/texture of a lotion or balm than I would – so she was the official baby product tester!
It makes no sense to go out and buy either baby products filled with toxic preservatives and dyes etc, or to spend a fortune on hand-crafted organic products, which you can easily make yourself. Simplicity is the key when it comes to baby and unlike their moms, they are really low-maintenance. Check out my video for making a bubble bath/shampoo – you’ll really save a bunch of cash. Remember the liquid Castille soap (BTW Trader Joe carries it at a great price,) is used for many recipes in my book (cleaning, doggie flea shampoos etc), so you’ll get your money’s worth from just one bottle.
There’s also a wonderful baby balm recipe in the book, but honestly, after your baby’s bath, you can just as easily use an organic, cold-pressed oil such as sweet almond or jojoba oil – Just pour a few drops into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and massage all over your baby’s soft, squidgy skin – HEAVEN!
Thank you for the great recipe, I’ll definitely try to make it to my 2.5 years old son.
