Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar (get the aged, syrupy stuff)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon tamari sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon mixed dried Italian herbs
- 1 package of tempeh, sliced in half horizontally
- 2 teaspoons arrowroot or tapioca starch
Directions:
- Mix the vinegar, maple syrup, tamari sauce, and Italian herbs together in a shallow baking dish. Add the tempeh, coating it well on both sides. Cover the dish and marinate for two hours.
- Heat a cast-iron, ridged grill pan. When the pan is smoking hot, add the tempeh slices to the pan and sear on both sides, approximately 1 minute per side. Mix the arrowroot starch into the leftover marinade and then add it to the pan. Let the marinade bubble while you gently stir it around the tempeh for 2 minutes.
- Transfer the tempeh to a platter and spoon the marinade over the top of each slice.
