Here we are Alcohol and Diet Soda-free week is ON!!!! Now, the reason that I included diet soda (as opposed to non-diet soda), is that I really don’t know too many women who drink full-on sugary soda. The two drinks that I see most women struggling to eliminate are alcohol and diet soda. Why am I being a Party Pooper? Surely the odd glass of wine, or a couple of diet sodas isn’t going to kill anyone?
Booze
Let’s first deal with alcohol: I’m not intrinsically against it, and actually studies have shown that red wine in moderation can be part of a healthy Mediterranean-style diet, however, those glasses of wine can easily add up and push us into the not-so healthy camp. So, why not take a week off (especially after the Fourth of July), give your liver a rest and a chance to detox, and if you feel better, stay alcohol-free for a while. There isn’t a man or woman I know who doesn’t admit to feeling 100% better off alcohol. Check out my 10 Compelling Reasons to Give Up Booze.
Diet Soda
Now for those dreaded Diet Sodas. OMG, when I took a few women through my 30-day program on the Home and Family show back in February, the diet soda was a big sticking point for my darling co-worker, Kym Douglas. She admitted that she was totally addicted to the stuff – the caffeine was one thing but even the caffeine-free was addicting.
Here’s the deal – and I’m going to shoot straight from the hip: Diet soda is a chemical cocktail in carbonated water with dye. Studies have shown that it ironically leads to weight gain, triggers insulin release, increases risk of Type 2 Diabetes, can lead to headaches, tooth erosion, and even brittle bones – do you need me to go on?
Take a week off both these beverages and give your liver a chance to recalibrate.
This week is all about filling your shopping cart and your body with beautiful, healthy beverages that will make your sparkle from the inside out.
