Sometimes we get so overwhelmed with the notion of being green, and in the rush of our everyday lives, just think “Oh, whatever, it’s just too much effort!” But, I want to remind you of just 5 daily steps you can take. If we all take these 5 easy steps, we will continue to lesson our burden on our precious earth. So, here’s what I do (if nothing else!) in my crazily busy day:
1. Resusable Bags: I know, boring and obvious, but how often do you really remember them? For every purchase? I am really strict about keeping about 3 of the ones that fold into a little pouch, in my purse at all times. If I know I’m going to do a big shop, I’ll take more.
2. Travel Mug: Again, boring maybe, but do you always remember to take a reusable water bottle and travel mug with you? It’s such an easy change to make, so if you don’t have a bottle and mug you love, go and invest in one today! Also, if you have a Starbucks-addicted friend who doesn’t use a reusable mug, why not buy one of him/her, and that way you’re making a difference.
3.Plastic storage bags: Yes – I use them almost every single day, however, I re-use them as much as is humanely possible by virtue of my bag-dryer. This was in inexpensive investment that makes washing and drying your bags a breeze.
4. Recycled paper products: This is an easy switch to make that will cost you a few more pennies, but they are pennies so well spent. There is no reason any of us should use virgin paper in our bathrooms or kitchens, so please check out markets like Vons/Safeway and Wholefoods who have reasonably-priced paper towels and toilet paper. You can also use super-absorbent kitchen clothes like my favorite Skoy cloths.
5. Choose non-toxic household cleaning products such as Method Home. This helps you and your family stay healthy, and helps the environment too. Here’s a great article that helps you figure out how toxic your household cleaning products really are.
