Yes – you heard me right – a FOUR-in-one DIY product for you and your kids. My daughter Lola has just gone off to camp, and just before she went I realized that I had to get her a sunscreen, a bug repellent, deodorant, moisturizer (super dry up in the hills where they are going), so I pulled out my supplies and got to work. You can either make a cube and keep it in a plastic resealable bag ( a bit messing when it’s super hot outside, but great for the outdoors such as picnics etc). Or you can just set it in a jar or a push-up tube. If you are making it for yourself and want to be less messy while it’s so hot outside, stick to the jar.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 c coconut oil
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 5 tsp beeswax pellets
- 1 tsp non-nano zinc oxide
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
- 20 drops lemongrass essential oil
Instructions:
- Place the oil, butter and beeswax in a double-boiler, as allow it all to melt completely.
- Remove from the heat.
- Stir in the zinc oxide.
- Stir in the essential oils.
- Pour into silicone ice cube tray (easy to remove), jar or tube, and allow it to set for 3 to 4 hours. If you set it in the fridge it will get nice and hard.
- I recommend keeping the cubes in the fridge when not using. You can keep the jar and the tube out at room temperature.
- This will be around an SPF 20 – remember the SPF is never an exact science (even in store-bought products), so always reapply every 2 hours.
Please do a little patch test on you (or your child’s) inner wrist before using. Just simply smear a dab on the inner wrist, cover with a bandage, and check a few hours later to see that there is no irritation. I always recommend doing patch tests for kids before using essential oils.
Please share this recipe with your friends, and keep me posted on how you like it.
