Without proper labeling, which BTW we do NOT have in this country, it’s tough to really know which foods are genetically modified. Good to know that the 3 most genetically modified foods in the U.S. are:
- Corn (85% of the corn grown in the U.S. is GMO)
- Soy (This is the most heavily genetically modified crop in the U.S).
- Sugar Beet (GMO sugar beets make up half of U.S. sugar production).
So what’s a girl or guy to do who wants to minimize their role in the giant human experiment of testing to see if GMO’s are safe for humans or not? Here are 3 ways to help you avoid GMO’s in your diet:
- Look for the PLU sticker on your produce – the annoying sticker with a 4 or 5 digit code on it. If the numbers start with number 8, it means its GMO (think “I hate “)
- USDA Organic Certified: Although not an absolute guarantee, if a food item carries the USDA green and white organic certified stamp, in theory the product should be 100% GMO -free. It’s not an absolute guarantee because with the proliferation of the use of GMO’s on the U.S., cross-contamination can occur.
- Look for the Non GMO Project Verified Seal. This is a non-profit organization who is taking massive steps to create a legitimate seal that we can trust.
