3 Important Sunscreen Tips

3 Important Sunscreen Tips

My philosophy is the mineral sunscreen is the healthy way to go, but when it comes to applying sunscreen, you have to keep two things in mind:

1. Am I applying enough?

2. Am I re-applying often enough?

The truth is that smearing a  quick slick of sunscreen in the am before your foundation won’t carry you through the day – actually, it won’t carry you half the day, so you need to plan accordingly. Follow my 3 important tips and you’ll be all set.

1. For Your Face: Before you get dressed, apply a quarter-sized dollop or facial sunscreen or BB cream (minimum SPF 25), to your face, neck and chest. Make sure that you go all around your neck (especially if you have short hair or wear a ponytail). Also hit the tops of your ears.

2.For Your Body: If you are on vacation and in a swimsuit or bikini, apply a shot glass worth of sunscreen to your body (way more than you think). Get between your toes, and always have someone help with your back and shoulders to make sure you are evenly covered.

3.For Both! Even if you are not in and out of water and/or sweating, you must reapply every 2 hours throughout the day. This is WAY more important that the actual SPF of a products. Remember the SPF is never an exact science, so more important that you take control with regular re-application.

Bonus Tip: For your face!  I don’t love slapping sunscreen on my face after I’ve applied makeup, so in order to follow the every-2-hour rule during the day, I carry around a powder SPF puff or stick to touch up. I keep one in my car and one in my purse, so I’m covered – literally! My favorites are:

Jane Iredale Powder Me SPF, and Color Science Pro Sunforgettable SPF 30.
