One of the fastest swaps you can make in your beauty cabinet is deodorant. Drug store deodorants are full of chemicals that you just don’t want to put on your skin (let alone near your lymphatic system, which is close to your armpits). But natural alternatives can be expensive, and a lot of consumers are worried they just won’t work as well as the “maximum strength” options.
Here are three amazing, natural recipes for DIY deodorants. I’ve included links for where to by the ingredients (in case you don’t have them at home)!
Push-Up Deodorant
makes two 2-oz tubes
Ingredients
- ½ cup coconut oil
- ½ cup shea butter
- 4 teaspoons beeswax pellets
- 2 Tablespoons zinc oxide, non-nano
- 20 drops grapefruit essential oil
- You will need to buy 2-ounce tubes for this
Directions
- Melt oils and butters in a double boiler
- Remove from heat and whisk in zinc oxide
- Add the essential oil
- Pour into molds
- Allow it to set for 3 – 4 hours
Ingredient benefits:
- Coconut oil: moisturizing
- Shea butter: hydrating and nourishing
- Zinc Oxide: helps you to stay dry and helps with odor
- Grapefruit essential oil: antibacterial
Pit Paste
Ingredients
- ¼ cup tapioca starch
- ¼ cup baking soda
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon zinc oxide, non-nano
- 40 drops of your favorite essential oil
Directions
- Mash ingredients together in a bowl. (Note that when it’s warm outside the coconut oil will be liquid enough to mash without heating first. In the colder months, you may have to heat it by placing in a cup and then standing the cup in very hot water for 5 minutes.)
- Simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and mash together with a fork. Transfer to a jar, and chill in the fridge.
- In very warm weather it’s best to keep it in the fridge. In cooler weather, you can keep it out.

- Tapioca Starch and baking soda: help keep you dry
- Coconut oil: protects/nourishes skin
- Zinc Oxide: addresses wetness/odor
Body Spray
Ingredients

- 1 ounce witch hazel (http://goo.gl/vk9afs)
- 1 ounce aloe vera juice (http://goo.gl/LpXVIT)
- 40 drops of your favorite essential oil
- 4-ounce sprayer bottle (http://goo.gl/jzt6Ge)
Directions
- Simply mix all the ingredients and transfer to bottle!
Ingredient Benefits
- The witch hazel: astringent, helps evaporate sweat on contact
- Aloe vera juice: moisturizing
- Essential oils: lavender, tea tree, peppermint, grapefruit, lemon are anti-bacterial
