FAQ

You tell us to try to stay away from the ingredient term “FRAGRANCE” or “PARFUM”, but some of the products you recommend contain fragrance in their ingredient list. Why?

This can be very confusing, so let’s get some clarity: fragrance formulas in the cosmetic industry are considered to be trade secrets. Companies do not have to tell you or the F.D.A. what is in these formulas. The individual ingredients that make up the fragrance portion of the formula only have to be listed as “fragrance”. Cosmetics also do not have to be tested for safety before going to market. This “fragrance” portion of the ingredient list can be made up of 100 or more chemicals, some of which can be harmful to your health. The main culprits are a group of synthetic chemicals called “PHTHALATES”, which are suspected carcinogens and hormonal disruptors that are increasingly being linked to reproductive disorders.

If you do use a natural product with fragrance in it, you need to check that the manufacturer does not use phthlates!

**All of the prodcuts that I recommend are phtalate-free, including Bert’s Bees and Method.

When are the Gorgeously Green Skincare products going to be available?

We hope to have them available to purchase through our website late summer 2010. We will keep everyone posted.

I am finding some of the ingredients that you suggest we avoid in some of your recommended products. I am confused?

I have done my best to recommend to you the safest products that I could find, however, I felt it was important to include a few products that are a lighter shade of green (may contain a couple of ingredients that are not ideal), because I wanted readers to be able to find products that were available in stores Nationwide and that would work for every budget. Tom’s of Maine is a good example: many of their toothpastes contain SLS – an ingredient that I recommend limiting, however, they do carry some SLS-free products and are generally a great company that sell in drugstores and grocery stores Nationwide.

Remember to consult the “Shades of Green” rating system that we have just implemented. This way, if you are a purist and want a product that eschews the use of every synthetic chemical, you may want to look out for the Dark Green Heart. If you are not so concerned, but still want a safe and effective product, look for the bright or light green heart.

I need the recipe for the veggie wash that you demonstrated on Oprah. Where can I find that?
