Ever since I included this Minty Baking Soda Toothpaste recipe in my 3rd book, Do It Gorgeously, I’ve had countless letters about how readers love it. It is so refreshing and leaves your teeth feeling way cleaner than regular toothpaste. I have tweaked the recipe a tiny bit here, so enjoy! Also, you’ll save a bunch of money because natural toothpastes can be pretty expensive.

INGREDIENTS

* I added xylitol in place of the stevia because xylitol has been proven to reduce tooth decay.

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients together to form a paste.
  2. Spoon it into a small jar or air tight plastic container.
  3. When you are ready to use, you simply scoop out the paste with your toothbrush.
  4. The consistency is quite runny, which I like. If, however, it’s too runny for you, add 1 more tsp of baking soda.

If it’s not sweet enough (especially for kids,) add another 1/2 tsp of xylitol.

  1. I have been reading about brushing your teeth with activated charcoal to whiten them. (You can buy in capsule form at Walgreens.) I am currently using the activated charcoal 1/2 and 1/2 with baking soda (break open a capsule and mix the black powder with the baking soda). I dip my toothbrush in toothpaste (natural toothpaste, of course) and then dip it into the charcoal/baking soda mix. Although it is quite messy and you will look like a zombie for a few minutes, I do think my teeth are whiter as a result. Just swish your mouth out with water and the black will disappear. Anyway, I will try this with your homemade toothpaste!

  2. Are there no ill effects for using baking soda as part of your toothpaste everyday? I’ve heard to use it a couple times a week ’till your teeth are white, then limit it to maybe once a month’ish..? Do you use this every day??
